A Walk Around the Lake

in co-authorship with Anna Potyomkina

Anna Potyomkina and Oksana occasionally work together as an artistic duo, combining curatorial work with intuitive-based research, as well as gestures of care. A Walk Around the Lake is a site-specific audio walk that you can listen to here.

The audio walk takes place around the city lake of Ivano-Frankivsk and lasts about one hour. It was held on February 24, the date marking the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The walk deliberately shifts attention away from human-centred narratives. Instead, participants were invited to turn their focus toward the lake’s winter ecosystem: fish resting beneath the ice, birds moving between trees and other living forms adapting to the cold season. Through a sequence of quiet prompts, the audio encourages slow observation and attentive listening to the non-human life inhabiting the landscape.

The narrative of the walk moves between different layers of memory, between what is visible and what remains hidden. It shifts between ecological observation, the history of the lake itself, and poetic speculation.

Along the way, participants were invited to perform simple gestures of care.

Rather than commemorating the date through direct narration, the walk proposes another form of response: shifting attention outward, toward the fragile networks of life that continue around us.
